Eren Yeager Blog

Eren Yeager

Before You Read…

Obviously, massive spoiler warning for all of Attack on Titan, but that goes without saying. Otherwise, do keep in mind before reading this blog that it will not be covering any games related to Attack on Titan, which includes the Koei Tecmo AoT Duology, the multiple 3DS titles, or the gacha games AoT: Tactics and AoT: Brave Order. In regards to the KT games, they don’t have any major feats worth looking into in regards to Eren’s scaling specifically at least, and much of the exclusive things found in the game such as the ODM Gear just blatantly goes against the setting Attack on Titan builds itself on. As for the other games, they are either just retellings, shut down, or untranslated, and with how difficult this verse can be to research in the first place, adding these on would’ve made it even harder.

Also, mandatory trigger warning for gore as Attack on Titan is not afraid to get pretty brutal.

Eren in Seasons 1-3 of Attack on Titan

Eren in Season 4 of Attack on Titan

Eren Yeager is ready to rumble in DEATH BATTLE!

Background

"From the moment we’re born, we’re all…free. Fiery waters…Lands of ice…Or whatever else! Whoever gets to see those things…will have the greatest freedom this world has to offer! Fight! If anything is worth giving your life, it’s that! It doesn’t matter how terrifying or cruel the world may be! Fight! Fight! FIGHT!!!"

Born to Grisha & Carla Yeager in the Shiganshina District, Eren from a young age was defined by his desire for freedom. Despising the 3 walls that surrounded him, Eren dreamed to one day join the Scout Regiment and discover the outside world he read about with his friends Armin and Mikasa. However, Eren’s relatively peaceful life would change on one fateful day when two Titans, known as the Colossal and Armored, would breach Wall Maria. Amidst the chaos, Eren would be forced to watch as his own mother was devoured by a Titan, swearing to himself that he would one day kill every last monster in this world.

Eren would go on to join the military at the age of 12, training in the Cadet Corps with his fellow soldiers to-be all so he could join the Scouts and kill every Titan he could. On the last day of his time in the Cadet Corps however, Eren would yet again come face to face with the Colossal Titan, this time kicking open a hole in Wall Rose and causing Titans to breach the Trost District. Despite his hopes, his dreams, and everything he suffered however, Eren would sacrifice himself to save Armin from the jaws of a Titan. In the stomach of this Titan, reminded of his mother, Eren formed what he believed to be his final thoughts, a clear, burning desire to exterminate all Titans.

Soon enough, Eren would burst from the insides of this Titan not as a man, but as the Attack Titan. With his newly acquired abilities, Eren would use his Titan form to plug the hole in Wall Rose and be responsible for humanity’s first ever victory over the Titans. Soon enough, Eren would join the Scout Regiment and be tasked with the goal of sealing Wall Maria as well as finding out why the basement in his old family home was so important. Along this path, Eren would be betrayed by some of his closest comrades such as Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt, who revealed themselves to also be Titans. Eren would later learn that the Titan he wielded was also a particularly special Titan, known as the Founding Titan, one who has the ability to control all Titans.

Despite the hardships and many losses, including Armin nearly losing his life, Wall Maria would be reclaimed and the basement finally found. In that basement, Eren, Mikasa, as well as Scout commanders Levi and Hange, would discover that they are members of a race known as Eldians and that the outside world was far from extinct. It would also turn out that these Eldians are an oppressed group in the outside world, being seen as monsters due to being the only race capable of transforming into Titans. This revelation would begin Eren’s long descent into madness, culminating in an almost complete change in demeanor.

4 years would eventually pass, and Eren would eventually devise a plan along with Zeke, his half-brother and wielder of the Beast Titan, to use the Founding Titan’s power to sterilize all Eldians and end the existence of Titans as a whole. However, Eren would later betray Zeke, take control of the Founding Titan, and enact his true plan…the complete and utter destruction of all life outside the walls Eren called home, known as the Rumbling. Unleashing cataclysm on the entire world, Eren’s allies and even some of his enemies such as Annie and Reiner, would join together to form the Alliance and attempt to stop Eren.

After a long fought battle against the now almost godlike Eren, Eren’s life would be ended by the person he loved most, Mikasa, fully accepting that she must say goodbye to Eren despite everything they went through together. Soon enough, Eren’s comrades would all receive memories from the now deceased Eren, revealing his plan to make them into heroes via killing him. Amidst the mountains of corpses and rivers of blood left in his wake, Eren Yeager was to most a monster, but to a select few, he was simply a boy who sought freedom he could never truly obtain.

Experience/Skill

Eren has been fighting since he was a child, constantly getting into fights with other children and later killing two human traffickers before he was even 10 years old. His preference for combat carried over into his military training, making it into the Top 5 of his class, which is especially impressive when the other 4 spots are taken up by 3 child soldiers and a superhuman. During his days in the 104th Class, Eren was noted for his exceptional skill in unarmed combat, being 2nd only to Mikasa, but despite his prowess, Eren was consistently admonished by his instructor Keith Shadis for his impulsivity and anger issues clouding his judgement and planning skills

In spite of his anger issues however, Eren consistently shows extremely proficient knowledge of martial arts throughout Attack on Titan thanks to his military training and the specific training from Annie Leonhart, who had been trained in martial arts since she was a child. Eren’s fighting style is a sort of reckless boxing style focused on overwhelming his opponent with attacks as much as possible, forcing them to focus on defense and drain their stamina over the course of a fight. Eren is also extremely proficient in grappling techniques, using them to gain the upperhand over Reiner in their first fight during the Clash of the Titans arc.

After the 4 year timeskip in Attack on Titan however, much of Eren’s emotional issues, on the surface at least, have subsided and gave way to a deadly tactician. During his assault on Marley, Eren deduced the wielder of the War Hammer Titan’s location and their weaknesses before anyone else, and later used some of its own abilities against it, such as using the extremely durable crystal that forms around the wielder as a way to block against attacks. Eren would even use the Jaw Titan as a tool to crack this crystal, kill the War Hammer, and obtain its power for himself, and would’ve obtained the Jaw Titan as well if not for Reiner’s intervention.

Perhaps the single greatest showing of Eren’s intelligence however is his grandiose plan revealed in the climax of the War for Paradis arc, where Zeke and by extension the audience would come to realize that Eren had manipulated the entirety of Attack on Titan’s events using the unique powers of the Attack Titan. While these powers will be clarified further in the abilities section, to put it as simply as it can, Eren manipulated the events of Attack on Titan to ensure he would receive the Attack and Founding Titans by sending memories from the future to past Attack Titan wielders such as Kruger, his own father Grisha, or even younger versions of Eren himself, essentially creating a stable time loop that guarantees he gets these powers, with many of these events occurring before Eren was even born.

Equipment

Omni-Directional Mobility Gear

Attack on Titan | What is ODM Gear? | An Anime Guide — Poggers

Mandatory equipment used by all members of the military on Paradis, the Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, or ODM Gear for short, allows the user to move and attack in a 3-dimensional space rather than 2-dimensional one. To achieve this level of movement, one must fire the two grappling hooks attached to the device by pressing the top trigger located on the sword’s handle, and then press the bottom trigger to propel forward using the gas canisters located on the wielder’s hips.

While absurdly difficult to use, masters of ODM Gear can move at downright impossible speeds of up to 227 miles per hour. That difficulty is a hurdle however, and if one loses focus for even a second, any number of things could go wrong with the gear. In particular, ODM Gear throughout the series has a tendency to malfunction or outright break from even minor inconveniences, with almost every member of the main cast having a bad experience with ODM Gear breaking on them.

Despite making up much of his training in the military, Eren is rarely seen in-series actually using ODM Gear after the Trost arc, and completely forgoes using it by the 4 year timeskip in-series. Eren should likely still retain his training however, but obviously nowhere near the proficiency of his peers.

Ultrahard Steel Blades

Ultrahard steel (Anime) | Attack on Titan Wiki | Fandom

Developed by the people of Paradis to specifically kill Titans, Ultrahard Steel Blades are made in production cities via the melting of various minerals as well as “Iron Bamboo” and are the only weapon the people of Paradis have that is capable of fully piercing a Titan’s skin, as cannons and firearms are only capable of surface-level injuries.

Despite being made to kill Titans however, these blades are exceptionally good at killing humans as well, being used by Levi’s Squad as well as Levi himself to kill many a human opponent in Attack on Titan. In spite of being called “Ultrahard Steel,” the blades are ironically quite prone to breaking and wearing down, causing soldiers to wield usually up to 10 different blades. Once a blade is worn down enough, they can be ejected from the handle by pressing a switch on the back of it, allowing new blades to be attached.

As mentioned with ODM Gear above, Eren forgoes using these usually after the Trost arc of Attack on Titan, and has only one confirmed kill to his name with them funnily enough.

Abilities

Titan Shifter/Titan Physiology

Power of the Titans (Anime) | Attack on Titan Wiki | Fandom

A monstrous form that can be undertaken by Eldians via a variety of different conditions, Titans are the premiere threat for much of Attack on Titan, and their very existence drives the 2,000 year long conflict the story is built around. All Titans are created in a mysterious dimension known as Paths, where the Founder Ymir uses a form of special soil within the dimension to mold a Titan’s shape into being, before then sending the blood, bone, and muscle through something known as The Paths (different to the dimension, more on it later) into our reality.

There are two primary classifications of Titans in Attack on Titan, those being Pure Titans and Titan Shifters. A Pure Titan is born when an Eldian turns into a Titan and is not a member of the 9 Titans, Titans with specific powers that descend from the original Titan, the Founder Ymir. Pure Titans are essentially feral predators who lack almost any real intelligence, and unlike Titan Shifters, cannot return to their human form unless they consume one of the 9 Titans.

The other notable classification is Titan Shifters, someone who wields one of or even multiple of the previously mentioned 9 Titans, and is capable of transforming into a Titan at will provided they have enough stamina, have drawn blood, and have a clear goal in mind. The 9 Titans are as follows: the Attack Titan, Female Titan, Armored Titan, Colossal Titan, Jaw Titan, Cart Titan, War Hammer Titan, and Founding Titan. Unlike regular Pure Titans, while Shifters keep their human form and intelligence, they are destined to die in 13 years after obtaining their powers due to something known as the “Curse of Ymir.” The reason for this curse is due to the fact that the Founder Ymir died 13 years after obtaining her powers, with no single Titan being allowed to have power that exceeds Ymir’s.

The physiology of Titans is fascinating and downright impossible with their very existence breaking multiple fundamental laws of science. For example, despite their potential for destruction to the point they can destroy buildings casually, they are extremely light in relation to their size. Furthermore, Pure Titans do not need to eat or drink water despite having the same internal organs as humans, with their consumption of humans likely only being because of a subconscious desire to return to their original form. Titans also seemingly have an extremely high pain tolerance, with Shifters in particular not even flinching most of the time at the damage their Titan receives, such as Zeke feeling no pain when the eyes of the Beast Titan were gouged out by Levi despite being connected to his Titan’s nervous system. Most important of all however in regards to their physiology, is that unless the nape of a Titan is damaged severely enough, a Titan will always be capable of eventually regenerating the damage done to it

While it’s never explained why the nape specifically is what kills Titans, it’s likely due to the nape being the area where the brainstem and spinal cord intersect, as well as it being where a Shifter’s human form is located if they’ve transformed. Upon death, a Titan will begin decomposing extremely quickly, likely due to the sheer heat their bodies radiate at all times, with their bodies eventually turning into steam after a few minutes of decomposition.

A minor but notable weakness in regards to the physiology of Shifters specifically is that their Titan forms do indeed have a brain, and if that brain is damaged, it will hinder the physical abilities of their Titan without having to damage the Shifter inside directly.

Memory Inheritance

Thanks to the dimension known as Paths, all Eldians are connected via a metaphysical force known as The Paths which transcends the very boundaries of space and time itself. The Paths exist to ensure that no matter where they are in time or space, all Eldians are forever intertwined. It is thanks to The Paths that Eldians are capable of receiving memories from other Eldians, regardless of if they are a Titan Shifter or not. Despite not requiring being a Titan, this ability is most linked to Titan Shifters, as they will gradually obtain the memories and experiences of the Titan Shifter that came before them, and potentially even Shifters before that judging by the experiences of a Beast Titan wielder known as Tom Ksaver.

While on its own this ability can provide some useful experience, it is thanks to this very ability that the Attack Titan’s unique power manifests, that being the power to send future memories to wielders in the past, essentially a form of future sight. By taking advantage of The Paths’ transcendent nature, Eren used this ability to send specific memories of the future to Kruger, Grisha, and even his younger self all to ensure that he would eventually enter Paths and gain access to the full might of the Founding Titan. Interestingly, this ability seems to not have any real limit established, as it’s implied that upon kissing Historia’s hand, Eren at 15 years old saw future events all the way up to him committing the Rumbling and even potentially his own death (referred to as Mikasa’s Choice). However, at the same time, Eren clearly didn’t get every last piece of information that future versions of himself had, considering Eren gets blindsided plenty of times throughout the final arcs of Attack on Titan.

Due to the vague nature of this ability, my interpretation of it will be talked about later in its own dedicated Q&A section along with some other major applications this ability was used for in the story of Attack on Titan proper. To put the ability as simply as possible, Eren essentially can see into the future thanks to future versions of Eren sending their memories and experiences to past versions of Eren.

Regeneration

While unknown precisely why, Titans are capable of regenerating from almost any injury they receive provided it doesn’t severely damage their nape. This regeneration even extends to the human forms of Titan Shifters, and provides the likely reason for this ability. Upon blowing himself up in an attempt to take Levi with him, Zeke would wake up for a few short moments in Paths, and be repaired by the Founder Ymir with the very same soil used to build Titans in the first place. It is likely that a sufficient enough injury will have Ymir repair the Titan in Paths and proceed to resend the necessary blood, muscle, and bone through The Paths to repair the body.

It should be noted before any examples are shown that the regeneration in their human and Titan forms are vastly different for Titan Shifters, with things like limbs requiring a lot of time and stamina in their human bodies, while their Titan bodies are capable of regenerating extremely deadly injuries in very little time at all. Therefore, no regeneration feats shown from Titans should apply to their human forms.

With that out of the way, Titan regeneration is utterly ridiculous. To start listing off examples I’ll begin with cases of Pure Titan regeneration, which should be comparable if not lesser than Titan Shifter regeneration considering that Shifters are routinely shown as ludicrously stronger than regular Pure Titans. Notable examples include a Pure Titan regenerating its heavily injured foot in mere moments, a Pure Titan regenerating its entire leg in a few seconds, and that same Pure Titan regenerating all of its limbs and even its entire head in likely a similar timespan. While not nearly as fast as the above examples, Rod Reiss’ massive 120 meter Titan would have apparently regenerated from the absurd amount of gunpowder shoved down its throat, and likely fast enough for the Scouts to act as fast as they did.

Notable examples for Shifters include Annie being capable of focusing her regeneration into specifically one of her eyes despite her entire body being injured, Zeke surviving missing the entire lower half of his human body for a time until Ymir repaired it, and finally is Reiner who was stabbed through the chest and had his spinal cord severed by Levi, with Reiner surviving this by transferring his consciousness to his central nervous system. Reiner would later use this downright bullshit ability to survive his human head being blown up by Thunder Spears, this time transferring his consciousness throughout his Titan’s body. It should be noted in Reiner’s case specifically that while some extreme survivability, it did take a few minutes for his body to regenerate and begin moving again, and that regenerating his head specifically caused him to experience short-term memory loss.

To close out this section, while a somewhat contested topic, Eren should be capable of any regeneration feats shown here, as the capability of Titan regeneration is not something that differs between Titans like say their height, speed, or strength.

Hardening

An ability acquired by Eren after consuming the contents of a vial labelled “Armor”, Hardening is about as on the nose as an ability name can be. While unknown exactly how or why this ability is possible, Hardening allows for Titans to coat their bodies in an extremely durable crystal-like substance that can be used in a variety of different ways, with the potency of the Hardening increasing if focused in specific places. Eren has shown extreme proficiency in his usage of Hardening, from using it to prevent a cavern collapsing, filling in the holes of the 3 Walls, creating brass knuckles strong enough to shatter the armor of the Armored Titan, or even trapping enemies in his currently hardening Titan while he escapes. Eren should also be capable of the same uses of Hardening that characters such as Annie, Reiner, and Zeke have shown considering his proficiency in it. These include creating claws from their fingers and toes or using Hardening on parts of the body that are currently being attacked.

War Hammer Titan

Obtained by Eren after killing Lara Tybur and drinking her spinal fluid, the War Hammer Titan is one of the strongest Titans in Attack on Titan, and showcases a level of proficiency in Hardening in the series that is second to none. Limited only by the creator’s imagination and stamina, the War Hammer pushes Hardening as a concept to its absolute limit, creating massive structures and weapons out of seemingly nothing. Ranging from the titular weapon it’s named after, to swords, crossbows, whips, massive pillars, and more, all of these are considered only a fraction of what the War Hammer can create.

Perhaps the most interesting trait of the War Hammer however is the fact it is entirely remote controlled. Unlike almost all other Titans, destroying the nape of the War Hammer will not kill it, as the Titan is formed via a cable connecting itself to a massive crystal that encases the wielder. This same crystal formation was used by Annie much earlier in the series right before she was about to be captured by the Scouts, and judging by the fact she was still in the crystal years after the invention of Thunder Spears, it stands to reason that it should be at worst comparable if not much more durable then the armor of the Armored Titan.

While Eren himself doesn’t use a majority of these abilities upon obtaining the Titan, the reasoning for this is due to a variety of factors such as Eren likely not wanting to waste stamina on massive weapon creation when he’s fighting 2 Titans at once, the severe brain damage his Titan suffers later on, and not wanting to remotely control his Titan as the entire point of this arc was so that he could make contact with Zeke and access the Founding Titan.

The War Hammer Titan is of course not perfect however, as repeated throughout this section it can cause serious stamina depletion if its creation abilities are spammed without much thought, and despite the potential surprise factor of its remote control…if the cord between the crystal and Titan is severed, the user is essentially made into a sitting duck as their Titan will instantly die afterwards.

Paths

In the world of Attack on Titan, all Eldians are connected through an invisible force known as the Paths. As mentioned previously, the term “Paths” refers to 2 different things in Attack on Titan, those being the dimension named as such as well as the metaphysical paths housed in that dimension. For the sake of trying to make things a little less confusing, any time I am talking about the metaphysical force, I will describe it as “The Paths”, and any time I am talking about the dimension, I will refer to it as just “Paths.”

The dimension of Paths is seen as a large desert in perpetual nightfall, with a starry sky overseeing endless miles of what appears to be sand. Described as “exceeding human comprehension” and “transcending space and time,” this dimension operates on a completely different stream of time than our own world, with milliseconds feeling like years, and time even being described as both “instant and infinite.” It is this dimension that houses the metaphysical force known as The Paths, the Founder Ymir, the mystical soil used to create Titans, and the place where all branches of The Paths both form and intertwine at, the Coordinate.

It is through the The Paths that Eldians are connected, as each time an Eldian is born, a new Path protrudes from the Coordinate, and all Paths will eventually return to the Coordinate. It is said that “the Founder Ymir is connected to The Paths, and The Paths are infinite” with The Paths being used to transfer memories and wills to other Eldians, as well as the blood, flesh, and bone necessary for Titans to manifest in our world.  Thanks to the nature of the dimension that houses them, The Paths are capable of connecting Eldians throughout space and time, allowing for the existence of abilities like Eren’s Attack Titan and its future sight or the summoning of previous Titan Shifters by the Founder Ymir.

The Paths, both the dimension and concept, are very interpretation heavy in regards to their usage in VS Debating, and will have its own Q&A section dedicated later on for my interpretations of it.

Coordinate

An ethereal ever-growing tree of light that towers over the dimension known as Paths, the Coordinate is the reason why all Eldians are connected, as each time an Eldian is born, a new Path will sprout from the tree and intersect with it. The Coordinate doesn’t just connect these Eldians however, as the Coordinate is the Founding Titan itself, and allows wielders of the Founding Titan to be able to control all Eldians across time and space, likened as being part of the Founding Titan’s body, no matter where Eldians are.

To be more specific, the Coordinate is Ymir Fritz, the original Founding Titan. Persisting in the dimension of Paths after her death for over 2,000 years by the time of Attack on Titan, Ymir Fritz wields the power to interact with and use the Coordinate for an endless variety of reasons. Due to her twisted sense of love for King Fritz the First, Ymir is traditionally bound by a vow of complete servitude to his descendents, with his descendents using the Founding Titan’s power countless times for their own benefit.

The power of the Coordinate is almost limitless in terms of its control over Eldians, with various descendents of King Fritz using it to transform countless Eldians into Colossal Titans, alter the memories of entire populations of people, change the biological structure of all Eldians, telepathically communicate with all Eldians, bring Eldians into the dimension of Paths, summon Titans from the past, remove specific traits from Titans, and even remove the ability to transform into Titans altogether.

In spite of its incredible power, Ymir herself never once used these powers for her own benefit, always obeying the commands of those with even the slightest relation to the original King Fritz. However, in one fateful moment, Eren Yeager would make contact with her and speak to her not as a god or a slave, but as merely a person, and beg her to give him the power necessary to end this world that had done nothing but hurt her. Ymir would then break the vow of nonviolence that was imposed on users of the Founding Titan by a later descendent, and grant Eren full access to the complete power of the Coordinate, otherwise known as the Founding Titan.

Transformations

Attack Titan

A member of the 9 Titans, the Attack Titan is Eren’s primary Titan transformation throughout the series and contains the ability to see memories of future wielders, essentially giving all users of the Attack Titan a sort of future sight. Standing at 15 meters in height, the Attack Titan is made of extremely dense muscle, capable of shattering buildings without even a scratch. It is through this form that Eren also wields the powers of the War Hammer Titan, allowing Eren to create whatever he desires out of Hardening provided he has the imagination and stamina to do so.

Perhaps the most notable trait in regards to this Titan besides its ability of future sight is its stamina efficiency, with Eren being capable of transforming into this Titan a total of 3 times during the raid on Marley, making him 2nd only to Pieck Finger, wielder of the stamina efficient Cart Titan, in terms of Titan transformations activated in one fight. As the Attack Titan, Eren fights both methodically and persistently, usually trying to drain his opponents of their stamina before surprising them with a sudden burst of his own stamina no matter how much punishment he receives.

Despite its stamina efficiency, the transformations do still have a general limit of 3 times, and that limit can be drained further due to the stamina cost of the War Hammer as well as if Eren receives any grave injuries to his human form, as his healing factor will then be focused on keeping his human body alive no matter what.

Enraged State

A state Eren’s Attack Titan undertook in Attack on Titan Season 1 during his fight with Annie. This form is seen exclusively in WIT Studio’s adaptation of the manga, as well as a brief appearance in the Koei Tecmo games, and doesn’t really provide anything concrete besides giving Eren a sort of flaming aura and having him talk about how he desires to destroy the entire world. Truth be told, I assume this was either a weird bit of foreshadowing in regards to Eren’s eventual arc into the final antagonist, and or just the adaptation differing heavily in regards to this part of the manga. For the purposes of a Vs. Debate, it doesn’t have much application.

Founding Titan

The Titan that stands above all others, and the single strongest thing in Attack on Titan, the Founding Titan is closer to an almighty God then a traditional Titan. Upon being granted the full might of the Founding Titan by the Founder Ymir, Eren became one with an entity known as “the Source of All Life” and assumed this monstrous form. The Founding Titan is enormous, so much so that its official height has actually never been stated across its appearances in both the original manga and its appearances in MAPPA’s adaptation of Attack on Titan. The exact details on how large the Founder actually is will get its own Q&A section, but its size is only one of the countless cataclysmic traits this Titan has.

Thanks to now accessing its full power, Eren has become one with the Coordinate itself, granting him total control over Eldians throughout all of time and space. Via this, Eren is capable of changing the biological structure of Eldians, transform Eldians into any Titan he wishes, communicate telepathically with Eldians, and even control the minds and memories of any Eldian no matter when or where they are. Furthermore, while the structure of this Titan doesn’t allow for much direct fighting, the body of Eren’s form is deadly even by the standards of Titans for one simple reason, that being its ability to call upon past Titan Shifters from the 2,000 years of Titan’s existence.

More specifically, by using the transcendent nature of Paths and the bizarre biology of his Founding Titan form, Eren can call upon any member of the 9 Titans across history he sees fit. There is also seemingly very little limit on the amount of Titans that can be summoned by Eren, and even if one is killed, they can always be brought back thanks to Paths being described as “a place where life and death has no meaning.” This essentially grants Eren an infinite army, as while it is finite in the sense that Titans have existed for a finite amount of time, the army can be summoned as many times as Eren wishes due to already being dead before being called upon.

It should be noted that in the series proper, Eren himself never once commands or controls the minds of these summoned Titans, with them instead being called by Ymir and forced to obey her will, but considering he was given all of Ymir’s abilities, he should be just as capable of summoning them as she was.

But perhaps the Founder’s most interesting ability comes with its user’s merging with the Coordinate, as due to the Coordinate connecting Eldians across all of space and time, Eren’s very sense of time essentially became non-linear. In Eren’s own words, the Founding Titan experiences the past and future all at once, and it is thanks to this that Eren was able to directly interfere with events in the past, with his most notable usage being when he commanded the Smiling Titan to eat his own mother rather than Bertholdt. Interestingly enough however, Eren would go on to contradict this ability in the dialogue added to this scene in the anime, establishing that Eren tried to change the past countless times but was unable to for some reason.

This specific trait of the Founding Titan is ridiculously up to interpretation for a variety of reasons, and like much of Eren’s kit, will have its own dedicated Q&A section going over my interpretation of this power.

Colossal Titan

The final form Eren takes and the last Titan seen in the series as a whole, the Colossal Titan is a member of the 9 Titans and wields the greatest destructive force of any Titan in the series. Standing at 60 meters tall, the Colossal Titan’s most distinct trait visually is their lack of skin and absurdly high body temperatures, to the point that Colossal Titans can turn the surrounding area into a sea of flames with a flick of their wrist. Colossal Titans are also capable of weaponizing the heat they emit into short range blasts, usually igniting anything in their vicinity. Furthermore, the Colossal Titan is absurdly strong physically, capable of kicking Eren’s Attack Titan so hard that it sent him flying all the way into Wall Maria, or throwing Reiner’s Armored Titan so hard it created a massive shockwave felt miles away.

By far the most powerful ability tied to the Colossal Titan however is what occurs upon transformation, as due to the sheer heat and mass of a Colossal Titan, a massive explosion similar in scale to a nuclear bomb occurs. This explosion is unparalleled in power, to the point not even the body of Eren’s Founding Titan could withstand it. This level of power is also one of its weaknesses however, as due to this explosion occurring no matter what upon transformation, a user of the Colossal Titan could harm their allies just as much as their enemies.

The other notable weakness of Colossal Titans is its energy efficiency, more specifically in relation to the sheer heat it emanates at all times. Each time a Colossal Titan weaponizes their body heat, they will burn away some of the muscle that makes up the Colossal Titan, and eventually reduce their Titan to nothing but a skeleton. It’s also implied that this energy efficiency issue could result in Colossal Titans only being capable of transforming once per day.

Interestingly, while extremely similar to a Colossal Titan, this transformation does differ from other Colossal Titans. Thanks to information cards from the anime, we know that Eren’s Colossal Titan is actually a modified version of his Founding Titan created after losing connection to the “Source of All Life,” which serves as the basis for the Founding Titan’s body and abilities. Despite this disconnection, Eren seemingly still can use some of the Founding Titan’s powers on himself, most notably its Titan creation, as its the only real explanation for why Eren was capable of transforming into a Colossal.

Yet again, expect a Q&A segment going over this part of Eren’s kit, specifically the potential power of the explosion as well as trying to explain some weirder parts of the Colossal Titan.

Support

Ymir Fritz

The original Founding Titan, referred to sometimes as the “Devil of All Earth”, Ymir is one of the strongest forces in Attack on Titan. Originally bound by her desire to plead King Fritz, this mentality would be broken by Eren, who would then be granted the full extent of her powers as the Founding Titan and her complete support.

As has been described previously in the Founding Titan and Coordinate sections, Ymir holds control over all Eldians on a level that exceeds even the limits of space and time itself thanks to serving as the intersecting point of all Eldians. As mentioned in those sections, Ymir’s status as the Coordinate grants her a wide variety of abilities such as biological manipulation, mind control, telepathy, etc. In regards to her support for Eren himself, while she has granted Eren her complete power, her will is still separate to his, albeit in full support of any actions that Eren takes.

Most notably, it was Ymir who summoned and influenced the past Titan Shifters against the Alliance, as Eren had dedicated himself entirely to seeking freedom and had no intention of stopping his former allies from achieving their own goals. Therefore, Ymir essentially acts as a second brain making up the Founding Titan, capable of helping Eren achieve his goals if need be by using any variety of her powers. It also is shown that Ymir was still bonded to Eren even after he lost his connection to the “Source of All Life”, as Ymir is the creator of all Titans, and therefore would be the one to grant Eren his Colossal Titan form.

“The Source of All Life”

The Source of All Life, known more affectionately as “Wormy McWormington”, is the true origin of all Titans in Attack on Titan, and seemingly all life itself. Existing since at least the Cambrian Period, this creature would lay dormant in a massive tree before eventually fusing with a young Ymir Fritz. Upon this fusion’s completion, a massive bolt of lightning would strike down and birth the original Founding Titan.

Upon Ymir’s death however, it seems the creature became an extension of her will, with it only showing up again upon Ymir granting the full might of the Founding Titan to Eren. Upon being granted this, Eren would fuse with the beast just as Ymir once did, and transform into the monstrous Founding Titan, with the Source of All Life seemingly even serving as a basis for the physical form of Eren’s Founding Titan. It would be revealed later on that the creature is responsible for the most powerful traits of the Founding Titan, as its separation from Eren due to an attack on his nape would strip him of most of his Founding Titan powers, with even his Colossal Titan form potentially being something granted to him by Ymir rather than something he could consciously create. This is supported in the series itself by the fact that if the Source of All Life had fused with Eren once more, the Rumbling could potentially start all over again, implying that things such as mind control and other abilities linked to the Coordinate are connected to this beast.

Unlike Ymir however, who serves as more of a spiritual force that helps Eren, the Source of All Life is capable of manifesting into the real world and is extremely deadly at that. As the origin point of all Titans, this creature is far superior to Shifters such as Reiner, Annie, and Pieck, who all struggled to physically hold back the beast from reaching Eren even with their combined strength. It’s even possible that the Source of All Life is durable enough to survive the explosion of the Colossal Titan, albeit this is more speculation heavy.

The scariest ability of this creature however, is its ability to spray a sort of tear gas that will transform any Eldians who are not either a Shifter or Ackermann into Pure Titans that are completely subservient to its will.

Past Titan Shifters

In the dimension known as Paths, it is said that “life and death have no meaning”, and there is no better showing of this idea in Attack on Titan then the Founding Titan’s ability to call upon past wielders of the 9 Titans. For a more in-depth explanation, due to The Paths connecting all Eldians regardless of space or time, Eren’s Founding Titan is capable of summoning and sustaining all previous Titan Shifters across the ages despite already being deceased, with these Shifters then being willed to fight for Eren regardless of their previous allegiance.

These Shifters share identical abilities, strength, and speed with their original forms, with only some minor differences such as their coloration, Colossal Titans like Bertholdt not exploding upon being summoned, or the lack of human hosts resulting in things like War Hammer Titans now being killed if its nape is destroyed. Even deadlier, this army of Titans is essentially infinite, as while there is a limit to the amount of Titan Shifters that have existed throughout the 2,000 years of the existence of Titans, any Shifter can just be resummoned upon death due to them already technically being dead once called upon.

While some Shifters did eventually break free of the Founder’s will and help the Alliance stop Eren, this was only possible thanks to Armin and Zeke both being brought into Paths as well as Ymir’s desire for connection allowing it in the first place. Therefore, if one wishes to somehow take control of this army, they must be capable of reaching Paths and superseding Ymir.

Survey Corps

The branch of the Paradis Military dedicated to exploring beyond the 3 walls, the Survey Corps were something Eren dreamed of joining since he was a child, and would eventually become part of shortly after the Trost District arc. Considering the Survey Corps’ best members are people Eren has fought alongside for at least 4 years, with many of them being people he’s known even longer, it stands to reason Eren should definitely scale.

Warriors

Marley’s trump cards, the Eldian Warrior Unit. Throughout Attack on Titan, Eren and his allies would clash with a variety of these Warriors, and eventually even work together with some of them. Going by the standards of the series’ end, most of these Warriors should be relative to each other with the exception of the Colossal Titan, meaning scaling Eren to them isn’t very difficult.

Armin Arlert

The inheritor of the Colossal Titan, as well as Eren’s closest friend and boyfriend. While Eren’s Attack Titan should not have a chance in hell of scaling to either Armin, or by extension, Bertholdt’s Colossal Titans, his Founding and Colossal Titan forms should very easily scale to any physical showings. Furthermore, Colossal Titan explosions have no evidence in-series for varying in power between users, so Eren’s Colossal Titan explosions should be just as capable as the ones performed by Armin and Bertholdt.

Weaknesses

Despite the immense power that this blog has presented so far, Eren obviously isn’t some unkillable God. In his Attack Titan state, Eren can only transform up to 3 times, as anything beyond that will result in weaker and weaker versions of that Titan, with this limit being shortened further via usage of abilities like Hardening. In fact, if Eren pushes his luck too hard, his Titan could potentially even begin absorbing his human form after one too many transformations.

Furthermore, while Eren’s Founding Titan and Colossal Titan forms are incredibly powerful, their sheer size can also make them a gigantic target, especially if one figures out that Eren is located in the mouth of the Titan, rather than the nape. This becomes even more of an issue to it being unknown if Eren can separate himself from the Founding or Colossal Titans like he can with his Attack Titan, as Eren is never once seen regenerating his human body and escaping the Titan in case of emergency in the series proper.

Finally, while Titans themselves have showcased ludicrous regeneration, the healing factor of the human forms of Titan Shifters is nowhere near as fast. If one overtaxes their healing factor, usually through the removal of all 4 limbs, a Titan Shifter will require at least a few minutes to regrow their limbs and the necessary stamina to transform into a Titan in the first place. If the healing factor is overtaxed, they lose their ability to transform and are rendered just as human as you and me.

Questions & Answers

Would Abilities Like the Founder and Rumbling Be Given in Death Battle?

The answer is yes and no. The Founding Titan by itself would likely be given in the context of current Death Battle, as while it is non-standard, the only real prerequisite for the form is Ymir granting it to Eren. The Founding Titan is also generally what Eren is known for in the context of VS Discussion nowadays, so I would be very surprised if the form isn’t given, same goes for Eren’s Colossal Titan form.

The Rumbling however is much more complicated, but not for the reasons one would expect. While Zeke’s death did halt the Rumbling, it’s stated in the series itself that if Eren reconnects with the Source of All Life he could start the Rumbling again. It’s unknown exactly why the series flip flops on this idea, but the best guess I have is that Zeke’s royal blood potentially keeps the Wall Titans on autopilot, rather than Eren or Ymir manually having to control the army via mind control.

The much bigger issue however is that the Rumbling relies entirely on giving Eren a battlefield advantage. The millions of Wall Titans are, as their name suggests, trapped within the 3 walls that protect Paradis Island. Obviously, in a Death Battle, the battlefield is meant to be equal for both combatants, making the Rumbling very difficult to justify. Even if one were to put Eren in a universe with the Wall Titans, but put him in an initially neutral area, the Wall Titans took days to traverse the planet, meaning it’d take a considerable amount of time for them to even reach Eren.

Is Attack on Titan’s Anime Valid to Use?

Before any other Q&A segments besides the above, it is important to discuss the validity of Attack on Titan’s anime adaptation, specifically MAPPA’s adaptation of the timeskip arcs, which provide some extremely large buffs to Attack on Titan overall. The most specific buffs are the height of Eren’s Founding Titan, Bertholdt’s slam dunk on Reiner, and a very large increase in power for Colossal Titan explosions. These will each be talked about in their own sections below, but it is of course important to explain why the anime is being treated as essentially equal to the source material here.

To explain it best I can, Attack on Titan has a very unique relationship with its anime adaptation, in large part thanks to how involved its mangaka Hajime Isayama was with it. While, from what I could find at least, he has never stated that the anime is the definitive version of Attack on Titan, Isayama has been involved directly with the background process of the anime as well as using the adaptation to flaws he believed existed in the original source material.

An interview with the New York Times gives us a somewhat more in-depth overview of Isayama’s involvement, mentioning that he reads the scripts and even helps overview the storyboards of episodes before they come out. Furthermore, in the case of something like Season 3 Part 1, according to an interview from Yasuko Kobayashi (one of the screenwriters for Attack on Titan’s anime adaptation), they talk about how Isayama used this season of the anime as an opportunity to fix many of the issues he believed were found in the Uprising arc of the manga. In fact, Episode 1 of Season 3 is even stated to have been made entirely in accordance to Isayama’s wishes.

While obviously one is still fine to prioritize the source material, hopefully this explains why I am so loose with using buffs provided by the anime, as it’s clear to me that it likely takes only slightly less if not equal credence to the original manga itself. Plus, it made the ending dialogue between Eren and Armin like 1000x better, so it’s the true canon for me. /s

Founding Titan Height

The strongest thing in Attack on Titan, the Founding Titan is an extremely difficult transformation to discuss for plenty of reasons, but easily one of its most confusing is its actual height. The reason for this, as mentioned in the section going over the transformation, is that the Founding Titan’s height is never once stated across any material related to Attack on Titan, meaning it is entirely speculatory how big it actually is. Most estimations for the Founding Titan use the shot seen in Chapter 130 of the original manga, which by comparing it to the height of the Wall Titans in front of it, put the Founder at around 235 Meters tall.

While the Founder’s depictions can sometimes fluctuate, this is overall consistent in the original source material. However, the 3D model used for Eren’s Founding Titan in Season 4 Part 2 of the anime would eventually be released online, complete with a complementary Wall Maria to scale its height to. Via this, calculations for Eren’s Founding Titan can reach up to 500 Meters in height, more than doubling the height of previous estimations. This is obviously impressive, and should be the end of this height discussion right?

WRONG! For in Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, the finale to Attack on Titan’s anime adaptation, Eren’s Founding Titan clocks in at an absurd 700 meters in height! This is almost triple the manga’s estimated height, and 200 meters greater than Season 4 Part 2’s model, which gets into the question of which height should even be used and why its height is important in the first place.

To start with the latter, the reason why finding the proper height for Eren’s Founder is so important is due to how it can affect calculations for two of the feats mentioned previously throughout this blog, those being Bertholdt’s throwing of Reiner onto the back of the Founder as well as Armin’s Colossal Titan explosion on top of the Founder. I unfortunately am unable to do calculations, so the best answer I can provide is that height can play a massive role into how much force/energy would be generated by these two attacks. With that answered, wouldn't the answer to the former question just be that the source material takes precedent?

Sort of. As mentioned earlier, Attack on Titan’s relationship with its anime adaptation is different to most due to Isayama’s involvement, meaning using the different heights seen here should be fine, especially when no information has been given on the actual height of the Founding Titan. The question then becomes, which should be used, the model from Season 4 Part 2 or the measurement obtained from The Last Attack’s depiction?

My personal stance is that it makes more sense to use The Last Attack for two reasons, which I’ll go over now. To start, The Last Attack is where any and all major feats involving Eren’s Founding Titan even occur, as the Alliance doesn’t begin fighting Eren until the last 8 chapters of the manga, which is what that movie adapts. Second of all, the Founding Titan is just generally shown more in The Last Attack, with its size comparison to the Colossal Titans even being generally consistent with the estimated 700 Meter calculation.

While obviously an official 3D Model can be argued to take priority just by ease of use, hopefully my arguments for the validity of using the 700 Meter estimation make sense, as I think it’s probably best to use the depiction most closely linked with the feats themselves.

Bertholdt’s Slam Dunk on Reiner?

In Chapter 135 of Attack on Titan, the Alliance would be utterly destroyed in their first match against the Founding Titan, due to its ability to summon all past Titan Shifters across the 2,000 years that Titans have existed. To be specific, Reiner’s Armored Titan would be picked up by the former Colossal Titan Bertholdt, who would then proceed to bite the head off of the Titan, before slamming it onto Eren’s Founding Titan with enough force to knock out most of the Alliance. It should be noted that the manga shows Reiner being removed from his Titan by Jean at the last minute, as he obviously wouldn’t have survived the impact due to his human body being exposed by the obvious lack of a head his Titan has.

While this sequence of events is the same in the anime, minus not directly showing Jean saving Reiner, the major difference comes from the impact of the throw itself. In the anime, this throw causes a ridiculously large shockwave felt all the way at Fort Slava, miles away from the Founding Titan. The force from this shockwave can reach extremely high numbers depending on the Founding Titan’s height, getting up to 179.56 Kilotons of TNT using the 700 Meter estimation from The Last Attack. The feat itself is perfectly valid to use for Colossal Titans in terms of AP, as well as durability for Eren’s Founding Titan as it takes no visible damage from the attack. The big question instead however, is did Reiner’s Armored Titan survive the impact of this throw?

The answer is…maybe? Obviously the biggest issue with this is that Reiner is separated from his Armored Titan in the manga, and heavily implied to be saved by Jean in the anime even if not directly seen, meaning we don’t have an idea on if Reiner’s Armored Titan could have survived the impact directly without relying on some guess work. The best evidence that can be given for this feat scaling to Reiner’s durability is the fact that we can visibly see the outline of his Titan in the aftermath of the throw in the manga, showing that it survived the impact even if it died shortly after due to Reiner being separated from it.

The issue then becomes that we do not get a visual aftermath for the feat in the anime, which is exclusively where this shockwave comes from. The best answer I can give is that it’ll just depend on interpretation, as while the feat originates from the anime, the actual events within the scene itself are the exact same, just with a much higher visual scale commonly found in anime adaptations. If one does scale this to Reiner’s durability, much of the cast of Attack on Titan can get massive increases in AP and arguably their own durability primarily via Hardening and Thunder Spears, as both are capable of shattering the armor of Reiner’s Armored Titan.

TLDR: The feat itself is fine in regards to scaling it to Colossal Titans and Founding Titans, but can be a good bit more difficult if one scales it to the durability of Reiner’s Armored Titan. I, personally, think scaling the feat to Reiner is fine even if the aftermath is only seen in the manga.

Colossal Titans

Credit to u/throwawayoogaloorga for this beautiful image!

The last of the 3 major things mentioned in the anime validity section, Colossal Titans have undeniably been one of the more frustrating aspects of working on this blog due to the sheer amount of misinformation regarding its abilities that have been spread by others and myself. The reason why so much misinfo exists on the Colossal Titan is likely due to it being the thing retconned the most in Attack on Titan, as it’s very likely that Isayama didn’t plan for it to have its signature nuclear explosion until he thought of it in the Return to Shiganshina arc’s planning, which can make explaining certain parts of it in the context of something like VS Debating very difficult.

Colossal Titans will be broken down into multiple sections going over various traits of theirs, and I’d highly recommend reading the overview given on the transformation in Eren’s transformation sections before reading these.

Can Colossal Titans Explode Whenever They Want?

Contrary to some arguments proposed throughout the years, Colossal Titans are not capable of exploding at any time they want. The best examples to support this counterargument are Armin believing he’d blow an entire town away if he transformed inside a prison cell, or Bertholdt wanting to make sure Reiner was out of the blast radius of his transformation before it occurred. If they could simply just explode whenever they wished, there wouldn’t be much of a concern on either character’s end for killing everyone around them.

One could point to the massive explosion Bertholdt creates upon landing on Eren and Reiner as evidence towards Colossal Titan users being capable of controlling the explosiveness of their Titan, however, it is far more likely with hindsight that Bertholdt used the ability to control the heat of the Colossal Titan to vaporize his Titan on impact, allowing himself to both quickly escape from his Titan as well as severely damage anyone caught in the blast zone besides Reiner. One could also point to the fact that despite transforming 3 whole times before the Return to Shiganshina arc, or the fact that upon being summoned by Ymir to fight against the Alliance, Bertholdt’s Colossal Titan didn’t detonate.

In regards to the former (and this whole section really), it is likely that Isayama just retconned the idea of how Colossal Titans work. As mentioned before, a pretty major plot point on why Bertholdt didn’t just immediately explode the Shiganshina district is his concern for Reiner’s safety, meaning that if the explosion could be controlled he’d have no reason to worry about this. The other point is valid to bring up however, as all other Titan Shifters keep their unique abilities upon being summoned by Ymir, so why didn’t Bertholdt?

There isn’t really a perfect explanation for this admittedly, the only explanation I can think of ties into why these explosions occur in the first place, that being the fact that Colossal Titans likely form instantly. Unlike other Titans in the series, even Eren’s Founder, Colossal Titans appear fully formed as soon as the transformation is activated, and it is likely that the sheer heat and mass of something like a Colossal Titan appearing so quickly results in such excess energy that their famed explosion occurs. It’s possible that the Founding Titan, due to its complete control over basically anything relating to Eldians, can determine how a Colossal Titan should form, therefore preventing the explosion. This is also likely why the creation of the Wall Titans didn’t just simply nuke the Island of Paradis off the map, as otherwise summoning all those Colossal Titans at once would…

This explanation for Colossal Titan explosions also helps debunk the idea of them scaling physically to their own explosions, as it’s far more likely that the explosion occurs first and then the Titan appears, as otherwise this would mean Colossal Titans are physically stronger than the Founding Titan despite it being explicitly said that no Titan can be stronger than Ymir.

To answer the question this section asks, it’s generally no. While Eren and Ymir can summon Colossal Titans without making them explode judging by Bertholdt, considering that Colossal Titan explosions likely only occur via the initial transformation itself, they can’t just force a Colossal Titan to explode after already being summoned.

What the Hell is Going On With Colossal Titan Explosions?

TN by AnimeFantasia

While the above section focused on a specific aspect of the explosion, this section will be a deep dive into them, as well as explaining the discrepancy in AP that they have. First and foremost, according to The Science of Attack on Titan, the explosion that Bertholdt caused via his instant vaporization can reach levels of heat of up to 5,300 degrees celsius. This is even more impressive in the context of this explosion occurring with only a half-formed Colossal Titan, meaning this level of heat could potentially get much higher, albeit to an unknown degree. While I did just argue that this instance of vaporization isn’t the same as a usual Colossal Titan explosion, one can make the argument that the relatively non lethal explosion seen here has no reason to be hotter narratively than the massive explosions shown later on by Colossals.

The other most notable aspect of a Colossal Titan’s explosion in terms of VS Debating is the aftermath, specifically the crater left behind by it. Before Season 4 Part 1 of Attack on Titan premiered, Colossal Titan explosions were calculated using the amount of energy required to turn rocks into dust, AKA pulverization. In the episode premiering Armin’s Colossal Titan however, we’d get a detailed look at the immediate crater left behind by these explosions, revealing that Armin’s surroundings had melted rather than turned to dust. To put it simply, the melting point of rock requires far more energy than pulverizing rock, resulting in massive number jumps that will be gone more in-depth in the following section.

It could potentially be argued that melting is an inconsistent end for Colossal Titan explosions, as we are never shown the direct crater left behind by their explosions outside of the anime’s depiction in Season 4 Part 1. However, we also don’t ever see concrete proof that these explosions don’t cause melting, as we very rarely if ever see the immediate aftermath of these explosions in the series proper outside of the one performed by Armin in Marley.

As for why there is such a steep number jump from things like Armin’s explosion there to his explosion on Eren’s Founding Titan, it again relates to the crater left behind by the Colossal Titan itself. In the case of Eren’s Founding Titan, it is essentially the only time in the series we get an actual visual indication for the depth of one of these craters, as we see Armin’s Colossal Titan is forced to climb out of the crater created by it, meaning it would have a depth of 60 Meters. In comparison, the depth of the crater left behind by his explosion in Marley is essentially impossible to figure out, likely requiring far too much guesswork to get any realistic numbers for.

TLDR: Colossal Titan explosions can be estimated to be at least 5,300 degrees celsius if not likely higher, and are shown to melt their surroundings rather than simply reduce them to dust, causing numbers to be far larger than what one would expect.

How Strong Exactly is a Colossal Titan Explosion?

Credit to Cabbage for this phenomenal gif of the highest end for Colossal Titan explosions!

The (hopefully) last of these Q&A sections will be relatively short and just going over exactly how strong Colossal Titan explosions can be, more specifically the one Armin performs on top of Eren’s Founding Titan, and give the various ends that can be gotten through things such as melting or the different Founding Titan heights.

In regards to if one uses the estimated height of Eren’s Founding Titan in the manga, Colossal Titan explosions can reach anywhere from 395.37 Kilotons of TNT to 11 Megatons of TNT, using pulverization and melting.

If one uses the estimated height of Eren’s Founding Titan via the 3D Model released online, Colossal Titan explosions can reach anywhere from 1.78 to 51.56 Megatons of TNT, using pulverization and melting respectively.

Finally, if one uses the estimated height of Eren’s Founding Titan found in The Last Attack, Colossal Titan explosions can reach anywhere from 3.5 Megatons - 101 Megatons of TNT, using pulverization and melting obviously.

If you want my thoughts, I personally use the 101 Megatons end for these explosions for the various reasons mentioned throughout these Q&A’s, but I wanted to make sure all 6 ends were included for the purpose of documentation.

What is Paths and The Coordinate?

If you’ve been following along thus far, you would come to realize that I have mentioned something known as “Paths” many, many times throughout this blog, and for very good reason! Paths is an extremely important part of Eren’s toolkit for a very large amount of reasons, but at the same time, is something very difficult to explain due to how utterly vague Attack on Titan is overall with the specifics of how it exactly works. So, consider this section a complete deep dive into Paths and everything surrounding it as well as interpretations I have of it. Also, just like I said in the abilities section, “Paths” refers to the dimension while “The Paths” refers to the thing that connects all Eldians.

Paths in Attack on Titan is a transcendent dimension existing beyond human comprehension that can only be seen by those who are considered Subjects of Ymir, otherwise known as Eldians. It resembles a desert at night, and stretches on for what seems like infinity, with time being stated to pass both “instantly and infinitely” in the dimension. Space in Paths can seemingly bend to the will of the Founding Titan, with Eren using the dimension to show Armin the sights they dreamed about in his book on the outside world, as well as showing Mikasa an alternate future where they ran away from everything

It is within the space of Paths that resides The Paths and the Coordinate, which serve as the reason for why all Eldians are connected. To expand on this, The Paths is a metaphysical force that is usually invisible to the human eye, and connects all Eldians regardless of space or time, with it being stated that “there is no fixed time in The Paths” and that there are “infinite Paths”. The Coordinate is an ethereal sort of tree that resides exclusively in Paths, and is intertwined with The Paths, as each time an Eldian is born, a Path forms like a branch on the Coordinate, with it then being stated that all Paths will eventually lead back to the Coordinate.

It is through this connection, as well as the Founder Ymir who resides in Paths, that all Titan abilities seen in the series are possible. Via the mystical soil that makes up all of Paths, Ymir molds Titans into shape out of this soil, before then sending the necessary blood, bone, and flesh through The Paths so that the Titan can manifest in our world. In fact, The Paths is even capable of transmitting things such as memories or the wills of other Eldians through them, allowing potential communication between Eldians no matter when or where they are.

It is said that the Coordinate is the Founding Titan itself, and it is through Paths and the Coordinate that the Founding Titan’s full potential can be unlocked. As mentioned plenty of times in this blog thus far, the Founding Titan is essentially a living God in regards to how it can control Eldians, being capable of changing their biology, memories, and even summoning them back from the dead via Paths. In fact, in Paths, it is stated that “life and death have no meaning” as due to the nature of Paths, all Eldians are essentially in a perpetual state of life and death, as Paths has no true past, present, or future and instead containing “all kinds of time”.

In fact, the anime adaptation of Attack on Titan establishes that Paths can exist even beyond the death of the Founding Titan itself. In the post credits scene of The Last Attack, it is established that the High School AU seen in the volume extras of Attack on Titan is potentially canon to Attack on Titan itself, instead taking place far into the future rather than being an alternate universe. This is important as Eren actually saw the versions of Mikasa and Armin that come from this once he entered Paths, implying that even after he and Ymir’s true deaths and the end of all Titans, Paths still remains.

It should be clarified HEAVILY, that in spite of the many statements establishing Paths as this higher dimensional structure, no one in Attack on Titan should scale to Paths in any form at least in regards to the destruction of it. There is nothing in Attack on Titan that establishes how the dimension was truly formed, and arguing Eren is cosmic in stats because he potentially destroyed Paths is just silly, especially since as mentioned above, the anime implies Paths exists even after Eren’s death.

In spite of that argument, Paths is still incredibly important to Eren’s kit overall, as it is what allows for the abilities mentioned prior such as biological control, sending future memories to past versions of himself as a form of future sight, potentially serve as a sort of “prep time” dimension due to the Paths’ unique relationship with time, and even theoretically allow for Eren to pseudo time travel. Speaking of…

Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey AoT Stuff

It is revealed during the climax of the War for Paradis arc that Eren’s Attack Titan wields the ability to send future memories of its inheritors to past inheritors of the Attack Titan, using it to essentially mastermind the entire plot of Attack on Titan. With this ability, Eren manipulated Kruger, his father Grisha, and past versions of himself all to ensure he would always receive the Founding Titan, enter Paths with Zeke, and eventually gain the full power of the Founding Titan via Ymir’s blessing and start the Rumbling.

In terms of a VS Debating angle, due to the lack of actual restrictions this ability seemingly has, it is an extremely powerful form of future sight that operates in a very complicated manner. To try and simplify it, imagine a game of telephone, where Future Eren passes memories down to Past Eren, who then is capable of acting on those memories to change events they experience in the future for their own benefit. However, just stating bluntly that Eren can essentially time travel requires a lot more evidence, so consider the rest of this a massive deep dive.

This ability would be described by Zeke as “the ability to transcend time”, with it being revealed that Grisha only killed the entire Reiss family due to being purposefully goaded into it by a future version of Eren. Interestingly, Eren would even go on to tell Zeke that if not for him bringing Eren into Grisha’s memories, he wouldn’t have been capable of giving his speech to their father that caused Grisha’s breakdown. This becomes quite confusing when one realizes Zeke would only be capable of this if Eren held the Founding Titan in the first place, as they both only entered Paths thanks to Eren having the Founding Titan already. While never explicitly explained, and something that admittedly still hurts my head, it’s likely meant to be a sort of time loop that Eren creates and perpetuates through his own actions and manipulation of the memories of other Attack Titan wielders.

It would also be revealed in this chapter that this moment, along with various future events, were what Eren saw upon kissing Historia’s hand in the Return to Shiganshina arc. An obvious issue that arises with Eren’s future sight however is that Eren clearly didn’t see the entirety of the future, as he gets blindsided multiple times throughout Attack on Titan’s timeskip arcs, which Zeke himself even outright states and tries to take advantage of.

The best explanation I can think of for this is that most of these future memories were withheld from Eren by future versions of himself, as things such as Sasha’s death or the countless deaths via Marley’s invasion of Paradis would likely further push Eren to believe that the Rumbling is the only real option he has. Considering Eren has done this to himself and Grisha before in the case of Carla’s death, where he purposefully withheld the memories he has of her death to ensure neither intervene, memory withholding is likely the best answer I can give.

Upon being granted the full powers of the Founding Titan by Ymir, Eren’s interaction with time would far transcend his previous manipulations. This is due to the true power of the Founding Titan being the Coordinate, which intersects with The Paths, which transcend time itself. Due to this, Eren’s own existence essentially became nonlinear, as Paths is stated to contain “all kinds of time” and Eren himself even states to Armin that the past and future now exist at once for him. It is through this newly acquired temporal state that Eren was able to use the Founding Titan’s powers to directly interfere with the past, even more-so then he did with Grisha.

By using the Founding Titan’s complete control over all Eldians, Eren would reveal that he commanded the Smiling Titan to go after and consume his mother Carla, as it turns out the Smiling Titan was going to originally consume Bertholdt before Eren’s intervention. Eren would also use this nonlinearity to have the Founding Titan’s powers activate even after his own death, returning the memories he had stolen from his comrades that explained his actions as well as having the power of the Titans finally disappear.

It should be noted that dialogue from Eren in The Last Attack that implies that the future he sees is predetermined, with him establishing that he tried countless times to prevent the Rumbling but was unable to do so. Luckily, this can be explained through later dialogue from Eren as well as an interview from Isayama that gives context as to why these events went unchanged.

During the final moments of their talk, Eren would admit to Armin that the Rumbling is what he wished for more than anything, not understanding why but knowing that it is the sight he wanted to see. It’s likely that the Rumbling is the “freedom” that Eren searched for for so long, and fits with the confession he makes to Ramzi about why truly did the Rumbling. Isayama’s interview would also provide more clarification on exactly why Eren didn’t change things, with Isayama likening Eren’s story to his own in the sense that they were both unable to change the endings to their stories due to being tied down by dreams they had when they were younger. With this, the explanation is likely that Eren is still more than capable of changing events, he just subconsciously prevents himself from changing anything that would result in the Rumbling not occurring.

Unrelated, but I hope Isayama is okay, this particular section of the interview made me feel quite bad ☹️

For an extremely necessary TLDR: Eren has a very complicated but powerful form of future sight, that seemingly can grant him insight into however many future events as he wishes via future versions of himself sending their own memories to past versions of himself. Eren is also seemingly capable of messing with time to a degree, being shown to interact with events directly in the past via the Founding Titan’s powers, albeit this obviously would only apply to his own life rather than any of his opponents due to the Founder only working on Eldians.

Attack on Titan Speed Stats?

Saving the most contentious part of the blog for last, these last few sections will be dedicated entirely to developments over the past almost year or so in terms of how fast Attack on Titan actually is. These will cover the Beast Titan’s rock throw, as well as both processing feats, as all 3 require explanations considering the series’ reputation for being grounded enough that a modern day military could kill the entire verse.

The latter two especially will be gone into as much depth as I can feasibly achieve as someone who doesn’t do calcs himself, so hopefully any explanations I do have make sense.

Mach 78 Attack on Titan?

While not a recent development as of this blog, Attack on Titan reaching speeds resembling anything above Mach 3 is still sort of a shock to many people, especially jumping from Mach 3 to Mach 78. The particular feat responsible for this huge jump in speed comes from the Return to Shiganshina arc, specifically Zeke’s Beast Titan throwing chunks of a boulder so hard they create a sonic boom. The reason this is so impressive speed wise is the size of the sonic boom itself, as well as it still being present and only just beginning to dissipate after the rocks had already landed, resulting in the Mach 50 - Mach 78 range that much of Attack on Titan’s endgame cast can scale to.

While one could argue this is a massive outlier, the moment is entirely unchanged in the anime in regards to it depicting the rocks landing first before the sonic boom’s dissipation, and there’s even another example of a double digit Mach speed feat found in Attack on Titan. During the Marley arc, Mikasa saves Eren from a massive crossbow bolt fired by the War Hammer Titan, which creates a gigantic sonic boom upon being fired. While the speed for this isn’t nearly as high as Zeke’s, being around Mach 12, it lends credence to the fact that these sorts of speed feats for Attack on Titan characters aren’t too unrealistic especially once one approaches the series’ end.

Attack on Titan Processing Feats?

While Zeke’s Mach 78 boulder flinging might be surprising, it overall isn’t a feat I think has many issues once context is given, especially with supporting evidence like the War Hammer Titan. However, there is another way to extrapolate speed feats for Attack on Titan that is…much more controversial, that being processing feats.

For those unaware, it is possible to calculate a character’s reaction timing depending on how much information they processed in a period of time, and it just so happens that Attack on Titan has a few notable moments of this sort of information processing, which can get the series ludicrously higher than anything it has ever dreamed of in the past. The two main feats for this idea come from the Return to Shiganshina arc as well as the War for Paradis arc, where Eren would have two different moments of processing years of information in a short time frame.

While I will explain why one of these feats isn’t valid and the other is, I do want to clarify that unlike my arguments in the ErenKaneki blog by Round 1, I do believe these perception feats should scale to Eren’s reaction times. Or at least, why one of them does. Full reasoning on why and why not will be given in the sections below. Obviously this type of speed for a series that is often considered extremely grounded compared to many other Anime/Manga will be contentious, but I hope my arguments will make sense.

Grisha Processing Feat and Why It’s Kinda Bad

After countless revelation after revelation in the wake of the Return to Shiganshina arc, our cast would return to the Walls and relay what they had learned, before then attending a ceremony in honor of those who died in the battle for Shiganshina. Upon kissing Historia’s hand however, Eren’s mind would be flooded with memories from his father, which would be revealed to be Grisha’s memories of Eren manipulating him into killing the Reiss family as well as scattered memories of the next 4 years, all of which culminate in Eren seeing himself commence the Rumbling.

Via a time frame of 33 seconds, this processing feat can range anywhere from Mach 1,942 to Mach 6,374, an absurd speed jump for Attack on Titan in comparison to the Mach 78 calculations for Zeke’s boulder chucking. However, this feat in my opinion is extremely flawed for a variety of reasons that I’ll go over to the best of my ability.

The first issue and technically most minor issue is that this level of speed for Eren at this point in time is not supported whatsoever in-series. This is a relatively minor issue overall, especially since the next section will be arguing in favor of a much greater speed feat, but considering the sheer speed jump from Zeke’s boulder chucking to this, even one scene that signifies some sort of greater speed in Eren would probably be necessary.

The much more pressing issue however, is that nothing in the story gives the idea Eren processed anything close to Grisha’s entire life in such a short timeframe, and if anything actively goes against that idea. Upon making contact with Historia, Eren processed various different fragmented memories that Grisha and or Eren himself had experienced. These memories were Eren seeing himself in the future force Grisha to have a breakdown and massacre the Reiss family, as well as scattered recollections of future events, most notably Eren causing the Rumbling.

While Eren did likely process most of Grisha’s memories, these were done while Eren was either not conscious or occurred gradually. This idea of Eren gradually processing this information is supported in Chapter 87, which reveals that Grisha’s backstory was being experienced just as much by Eren as it was by us, the audience. Specifically, Eren was dreaming of Grisha’s memories and was even connected to him emotionally, before proceeding to slowly recount the memories he had while dreaming to Armin and Mikasa. Eren also mentions Grisha’s autobiography and all the information within it being true, meaning that the memories Eren was seeing while dreaming are likely all things that were written down within that book. As I said before, nothing suggests that Eren then re-experienced these events along with the rest of Grisha’s life upon making contact with Historia, and considering that Eren only saw specific memories of the future upon kissing Historia’s hand, the same likely applied to him only seeing very specific memories of Grisha’s life in that moment.

With the evidence provided here, I’ve hopefully explained why this feat is likely just outright invalid to use overall, as it is a mess of assumptions and weird time frames that are far too difficult to figure out. I want to clarify that any misinformation and issues involving this feat are no one’s fault but my own, as I should’ve looked far more into the feat and the specifics surrounding it instead of trying to push it as a last minute way to argue for Eren back in the original ErenKaneki blog. This is obviously a very terrible way to start a section meant to argue why Attack on Titan processing feats are valid, but I think clearing up misinformation is far more important than just withholding thoughts that don’t support my arguments.

Ymir Processing Feat Deep Dive

So, if Grisha’s feat doesn’t work at all, why does Ymir’s? Well, there’s a few reasons, but context for the feat should of course be provided first. While in Paths, Eren in a desperate measure to stop Ymir would make contact with her, which would then result in us seeing Ymir’s full backstory. However, it would be revealed that just like with Grisha’s backstory, the person who was experiencing these memories was Eren, who would forcefully end them and plead to Ymir.

It should be noted that Eren explicitly processed at least 1,900 years of Ymir’s life, as we see her building the Wall Titans which were created 100 years ago, but it’s likely that Eren simply processed her entire 2,000 year existence up till now and chose to end her memories there out of disgust and sadness for her. While finding a time frame for this feat is somewhat difficult, it was mainly figured out by using the amount of time it takes for Zeke to understand what Eren is doing, which is around 10 seconds. By processing 2,000 years of information in the span of 10 seconds, Eren’s speed can reach up to 60% the Speed of Light, which is 6,723 TIMES FASTER than the previous highest viable speed feat of Zeke’s boulder throw.

This on the surface sounds absolutely ludicrous, and believe me, I completely understand why someone would be so opposed to it. BUT, and I mean a big butt, I do think the feat works. To start with why Eren was capable of processing this information, the reason for this is, like many things in Attack on Titan, thanks to The Paths and the Coordinate. It is through these two forces that the memories and wills of Eldians can be transferred to one another, and thanks to Eren becoming one with the Coordinate upon being granted the full power of the Founding Titan by Ymir, Eren should scale to any processing feats done via it.

This idea of Eren’s speed becoming massively increased upon being granted the Founding Titan’s full power is even supported in the series itself, as in the anime, the world is portrayed as frozen in time, with even sunlight itself appearing still. We then learn that this is how Eren sees the world upon being granted Ymir’s power and connecting to the Source of All Life, with Eren using this newly acquired speed to activate the Founding’s Titan transformation and trap Zeke within it.

A pretty big potential issue arises however in that Eren only performs this processing feat IN Paths, which as I’ve explained, has a completely different flow of time then our own world, with seconds for some being years for others. However, due to the Coordinate’s transcendent nature and Paths’ unique timeflow, any usages of it in the past would be something Eren experiences in the present as well as the future so long as he is connected to the Source of All Life. Considering Eren’s blitz of Zeke was while Eren was consciously in our own world while being connected to the Source of All Life, it means that Eren was still able to act despite the massive flow of information he’d have to process in regards to Ymir’s memories.

Now, a substantial counterargument to this is that if Eren’s Founding Titan is so ridiculously fast in reaction time, why didn’t it react to things as slow as say exploding barrels being dropped on it? This is a valid argument to have, but the series itself does provide a counter argument for why there wasn’t anything close to a reaction from Eren.

Upon becoming the Founding Titan, Eren essentially disassociates, with the series stating that Eren has dedicated himself entirely to “moving forward”. Therefore, any and all defense mechanisms the Founding Titan operates are revealed to actually be the will of Ymir, who will call upon and influence past Titan Shifters to defend Eren against anything that is deemed a threat. This is a possible reason as to why Eren didn’t dodge, with another simply being that due to knowing nothing here damages him in the future, he didn’t see much reason to try and react.

Finally, I want to clarify that unlike arguments present in the ErenKaneki blog, I do think this should apply to Eren’s actual reaction time when connected to the Coordinate rather than only applying to very specific abilities. The reasons why are simple overall with the context given here, those reasons being that the calculations already apply a perception to reaction ratio, Eren quite literally IS the Coordinate upon connecting with the Source of All Life, and the major scene supporting this idea of speed for Eren has him just generally view the world in such a way that it appears frozen, meaning if it only applied to specific abilities, it wouldn’t explain why Eren perceives EVERYTHING that slowly.

Does Anyone Scale Besides Eren and Ymir?

A question that can be brought up in regards to this feat, whether to argue against it or to buff the verse as a whole, is if other members of the cast could scale to it. The answer is no, for a wide variety of reasons. To recap, Ymir’s blessing and granting of the Founding Titan’s full power comes in the form of the Source of All Life attaching itself to Eren from his spinal cord, with his perspective of the world then coming after this occurs. It is through the Source of All Life’s connection to Eren that allows him to obtain and use the full power of the Founding Titan, as we know Eren loses the Founding Titan’s abilities upon being disconnected from it.

While the feat itself was performed by Eren before he had become connected to the Source of All Life, that was thanks to being in Paths, which has been established as operating on a completely different sense of time than our own world. The entire reason Eren scales to this feat in the first place is that upon connection he gains full access to and becomes the Coordinate, making it so any processing feats done via it he should be able to scale to. We also know previous Founding Titans seen in-series such as Frieda or Uri can not scale in speed to this, as their versions of the Founding Titan are bound by a vow renouncing war made by a descendent of King Fritz and never granted the full power of the Founding Titan by Ymir because of it.

This idea of them not scaling is supported by the scene that gives us Eren’s view of the world in the first place, as If any of our cast scaled to Eren in speed, why would they be forced to struggle with dodging attacks from Zeke, who was seen as quite literally frozen by Eren. It can’t be argued that summoned Shifters scale either, as they are influenced by Ymir to fight for Eren rather than being directly controlled, meaning any Shifters summoned by the Founder should scale instead to their usual showings.

Finally, Eren’s Colossal Titan state near the very end of the series should not scale in speed, as it is blatantly said that he has lost access to the Founding Titan and must connect with the Source of All Life again if he wishes to regain it. The Source of All Life also does not scale in speed by itself either, as it is reacted to by characters such as Reiner, who as I’ve established shouldn’t have any real reason to scale in speed.

Conclusion & Next Blog!

To summarize, I’ll bullet point my personal stats for Eren, as well as where they would go on VSBW’s Tiering System in case anyone is interested. My stance on Eren’s stats are:

Attack Potency

Durability

Reaction Speed

  • (Human, Attack, and Colossal Titans) - Mach 78 - (High Hypersonic+)

  • (Founding Titan / When Connected to Source of All Life) - .6c  - (Relativistic+)

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! This is obviously an absurdly long blog, especially for my 2nd ever solo blog following the Dragon Ball Cosmology one. In fact if you want a frame of reference, that clocked in at about 29 pages and 8,160 words. This blog clocks in at 73 pages, and 16,728 words, which is…a lot. While I already gave them, massive thanks to Cadendamonkay for his amazing visual work on things like Eren’s Background and Abilities, Rina Antiqua for a very large majority of these calcs, and Cyber for help with things like rechecking or updating arguments as well as beta reading this ridiculously huge blog, some of the arguments presented here wouldn’t even exist without his help in the first place.

As for my next solo blog…it’ll be a good bit, but I think it’s about time I take a long, roundabout look at one of my other favorite characters of all time.

  2. Not a bad blog I agree with almost everything except the processing speed of relativity to light and hardening titan too debatable with what happened to his titan but everything else seems fine.
